Client Need
The client purchased a “teardown” beach cottage on the oceanfront in La Jolla’s Bird Rock neighborhood. They challenged GDC and Marengo Morton Architects with using the land to its utmost to create a sleek modern home with extensive indoor-outdoor living spaces. The interior of the home aimed to continue the modernist look, incorporating imported reclaimed materials and cutting-edge design techniques.
Our Solution
GDC oversaw a complete gutting of the existing structure, taking the home down to its foundations and installing all-new caissons to support an extensive new oceanfront deck. We overcame numerous engineering challenges to transform a crumbling beach cottage into a rock-solid architectural gem that maximizes the property’s extensive views and stunning location. Small details like fry reglet recessed baseboards and grout-line drainage on the exterior patios exemplify the intricate attention given to every aspect of the design.
