FUNCTIONAL BEAUTY

This project was centered upon making our client's existing home accessible - both in terms of getting in and out of the house (we created several gentle-sloping ramps, widened several doors, and installed an automatic door operator on the front door); and within the home, assuring an open plan that promoted independence. Emphasis was placed on creating a fully-accessible kitchen in which the homeowner with a disability could be completely independent while pursuing her passion for cooking and baking. We also completely reconfigured the master bathroom to enable complete accessibility and safety.

Expansive, open kitchen promotes complete access

This, mechanized, adjustable-height granite table serves as a large prep space for baking and cooking; and doubles as an in-kitchen dining area. It's really cool.

Electric, adjustable height table provides easy access for baking and task work

A hinged oven was key to enabling our client to roll up directly in front of the oven to access the controls and to safely place (and retrieve) trays and cooking pots. The pull out cutting board to the right facilitates easy transfer of dishes to and from the oven.

Cooktop & oven are easily accessible with controls in reach

We were very careful to place the cook top low enough to use but high enough so that the hot unit's underside was a safe distance from our client's thighs as she rolled underneath.

The layout allows for our client to nest her wheelchair between the hinged oven and the pull-out cutting board - making cooking and transfers easier.

Wide passageway into master bedroom facilitated by barn door enabling full clear

The open architecture of the barrier-free desk enables our client to easily pull up to the side of the freezer and provides a work surface for paperwork and more. The lower cabinets have pull-out shelves for baking goods, recipe books and personal papers.
