Gracious Home in Madison, NJ

This gracious residence in Madison NJ is a stately center hall colonial built in 1939. With great light and generous square footage, it made the perfect landing spot for its new owners, a young family with a great sense of style. However, an awkward layout resulted in a choppy flow, and valuable space was wasted by an unfortunate “void” on the first floor.

Studio 1200 came up with a plan to maximize the existing areas and, with a small addition to fill in the “void”, reconfigured all three floors of living space for increased convenience. This update also allowed the family easier access to the patio, formerly a convoluted process.

The improvements to the first floor included a redesign of the kitchen, now completely open to the family room. A breakfast table serves as the transition. Highlights of this relocated family room are a new gas fireplace, a cozy window seat in a bay window, and an impressive coffered ceiling. Double French doors provide easy access to the back yard, much appreciated by the couple’s children and dog.

With the addition of a pass-through butler’s pantry, a stylish connection to the dining room was created. Relocating the laundry room to the second floor provided the opportunity for an additional bathroom just off the kitchen and steps away from the garage entry. Finally, the living room received a modification to its size while maintaining a connection to the family room with French doors.

On the second floor, the addition allowed for an expansive new master suite containing a much larger master bath and walk-in closet. Three of the four bedrooms remained virtually untouched, with the fourth allocating space to a new larger bathroom and the relocated laundry room.

The basement got a light redesign, with the addition producing additional space on this floor as well. The highlight on this level is a new playroom, and gym.

Throughout this renovation, the homeowners chose bold wallpaper that enhanced each room as well as showing off their playful side.

The homeowners report, "We call it our “new home” because that’s how It feels - we transformed the entire space with the help of Nancy and her team. What was once an old charming house with lots of unused space that wasn’t practical for our family has now become a young fresh home that is used from top to bottom."
