Greek Revival Hallway
Years of renovation and additions had turned this 1853 Cambridge row house into an unwieldy two family structure. The clients, a young growing family, wanted to turn the dwelling back into a one family, kid-friendly space, while restoring its 19th-century charm.
The transformation back to a one family home included the demo of the second floor kitchen, which became a bedroom, the addition of plumbing to turn a bedroom into a master bathroom suite complete with dressing area,
There was also the issue of light, as the house is an attached single family with windows on only one side of the house. How do you keep spaces from feeling too dark when there is not much natural light? The architect for the project, Tom Downer, solved this problem by adding clerestory windows and frosted glass doors so that even in the windowless master bathroom there is natural light.
The new master bathroom was at the top of the owner’s list of desires for the remodel. The contractor turned existing bedroom space into a gorgeous, modern yet period-appropriate master bath with a large glassed in shower and separate toilet closet. Outside of the master bath area is a dressing room complete with gorgeous large custom furniture quality armoires, giving the owners an extra special space to get ready for the day.
The most fun was had in the family bath, where color and light comes into play. The formerly drab and ordinary space was turned into an elegant but fun bath area for the owner’s two year old with the addition of fading blue and green mosaic tiles, a child-sized toilet, a larger bath tub and fun modern pendant lighting. A skylight brings in light & warmth.
Storage was also an issue the owners were looking to tackle. The formerly-mentioned armoires now house much of the clothing that formerly was packed into tight, small closet spaces. Large closets were added to both bedrooms providing ample storage for the family, as well as several cubbies in the walls between the bath and hallway, which can be accessed by both sides of the wall. Other bedroom additions include upgraded doors and hardware as well as base molding and gorgeous wide planked white oak flooring that compliments the history of the home.
