Beautiful taupe/grey Cabico cabinetry whispers "hello" in this Greenwich CT kitchen remodel. The original plan had the peninsula separating the kitchen from the dining room, which restricted flow and looked dated. By removing the peninsula, adding windows flanking the range and adding the island, I brought in much needed natural light, and modernized the kitchen while retaining a traditional feel in this historic home. The gorgeous Douglas fir island countertop, formerly a reclaimed joist from a train station, is echoed in the floating shelves supporting the owner's collection of antique bee boxes. Soapstone tops the remaining workspace. Rather than using wall cabinets, I designed a bank of utility cabinets along one wall that includes an integrated microwave drawer. With this configuration, the pull out shelving is more ergonomic and allows people of all heights and ages to reach items comfortably. I feel that this is a much better use of wall space and consider it a signature element in my kitchen designs.
