Historic Browning Estate
Io Design Collaborative was the lead on this design-build renovation of the historic Val A. Browning estate. The site inventory and analysis were particularly important, since little written information about the history of the property was immediately available. The firm created a restoration master plan with new hardscape areas including unifying paths, defining walls, a pergola and an outdoor kitchen and dining patio. The landscape architects worked in a design-build fashion during construction providing detailed drawings and sketches. They completed a full planting plan for the landscape, and worked on site with the landscape contractor and the landscape gardener during the renovation, placing new plants and directing the removal and transplanting of existing plants.
This residence is significant for its association with Val Allen Browning (1895-1994), one of the founders of the Browning Arms Company. He was also a noted Utah philanthropist. The donation of his collection of European fine art formed the basis of the Utah Museum of Fine Art European Masterworks painting collection.
