This custom freshwater aquarium was designed as a fully viewable island aquarium positioned between the kitchen and family room of this Lakewood, New Jersey residence. Integrated directly into a custom butcher block kitchen island, the aquarium serves as a living architectural centerpiece while maintaining open visibility throughout the home.

Measuring approximately 48” x 24” x 48”, the aquarium was intentionally designed with extra height to create a dramatic vertical viewing experience from both the kitchen and adjoining living spaces. The clean modern cabinetry and warm butcher block finishes were coordinated to complement the surrounding kitchen design and millwork.

The aquascape was created using natural manzanita wood arranged to reflect the warm organic tones used throughout the home’s interior. Because the aquarium is viewable from all four sides, special attention was required for circulation design, hidden plumbing integration, structural support, lighting placement, and access planning.

Aqua Creations worked alongside the home construction process to coordinate the aquarium installation with the architectural layout, cabinetry integration, and overall interior design vision. The result is a modern custom fish tank that functions as both a luxury aquarium installation and a functional room divider between the kitchen and family room.
