The owner of a successful hair salon wanted to pursue his dream of “living above the shop.”
He purchased a small corner lot (80ftx100ft) in a very transitional downtown neighborhood.
City bylaws required enclosed parking but the site was too small to allow a ramp and underground garage.
As a result the main floor is dominated by parking, leaving only a strip of aesthetics studio/salon reception off the commercial street and a residential lobby off the side street.
A double-entry elevator provides public access to the salon on the second floor and private access to the residential third floor.
The primary residence is organized around a large south-facing exterior living space that brings sunlight deep into the plan.
A second guest unit, also on the third floor, faces the city view and park.
