LA20 - accessory dwelling unit ADU

LA10 is a remodel of an existing single-family home in west Los Angeles that includes a detached accessory dwelling unit (ADU) and a separate exercise room. The project was conceived to preserve 4 existing trees on site, locating the areas to remodel and to build around them. The remodel of the one-story bungalow increased the residential area by adding a master bathroom, access from the dining room to an elevated deck and an exterior stair to access the rooftop. The ADU is a two-story residence with living area at the ground floor and sleeping quarters above. The interior is complemented by a wooden stair with custom built bookcases. The former two-car garage was reduced in size and converted into an exercise room. Here, exterior walls and the roof are clad in ribbed metal panels, while the interior has plywood walls and concrete floor. The renovation process was approached to integrate sustainable features like maximizing the area for solar panels, a greywater system and collecting rain water to use for irrigation.
