Los Altos Revival
We partnered with our clients to transform their 1950s ranch-style suburban home into a modern retreat for their young family. Our goal was to create a relaxing space with an indoor-outdoor feel while incorporating plenty of meaningful family heirlooms in the space. We reinvented and modernized the home with a fully remodeled kitchen and bathrooms, larger windows, clean white walls and colorful, patterned tile and wallpaper. When it came time to furnish the home, we were able to draw on our client’s collection of treasured family pieces to create a space that is truly special and tailored to their unique personal experience.
Large windows wrap around the perimeter of the bright and cozy living room. Art pieces created by our client’s grandmother are sprinkled throughout the gallery wall above the sofa. A custom built-in console and bench is topped with an assortment of throw pillows that lend a textural coziness to the room, while the black-and-white patterned sectional and chunky lavender throw add to the feel, creating an inviting first impression as you enter the home. We sourced the 1960s walnut-and-glass coffee table to tie in with the family heirlooms elsewhere in the home, like the mid-century coffee table and magazine rack that are in the nearby family room.
Open to the kitchen and dining areas, the family room has a similarly airy and inviting feel. French doors open to a generously sized deck and a large back yard where our client’s daughter can play. In the corner, a vintage wing-back chair from our client’s collection of family pieces is reupholstered in a vibrant Chinoiserie print, complementing the deep, richness of the navy blue velvet roll arm sofa. The couple’s heirloom mid-century coffee table is styled with eclectic finds, designed to draw on the cool blues and greens in the home’s palette. The shaker cabinetry in the adjacent kitchen is at home alongside the vintage and traditional furniture pieces that are meaningful for our clients, but they also lend a modern, updated feel to the home. The pale shade of taupe allows them to impart a bit of warmth to the space while serving as the perfect neutral backdrop for the colors and patterns brought into the space with upholstery and textiles.
