Manhattan Avenue Residence
Inserted into a densely developed, beach front community, on a modest lot, this house takes full advantage of the natural light, views and breezes that are unique to the coastal environment of Southern California.
Working within a simple rectangle, we were able to utilize the maximum allowable building envelope. This is an exercise in articulation, in joinery, and in the making of a building by exploring its component parts. The main loft space, located at the upper level is wrapped with windows allowing for a commanding, 360 degree view and recalls traditional marine structures such as lighthouses and lifeguard stands. The corner glass enclosed stair tower serves as the main organizing element and extends and shares the interior spaces with the street.
