Mid Century Renovation

The brief for this renovation was to capitalise on the homes beautiful coastal views and location but retain its mid-century origins and appeal to the owner. The desire was to open the interior to the Northern ocean view and obtain superior access and flow between the living spaces and the rear garden. Within the existing external walls, the upper floor was completely changed and internal stairs relocated. The lower storey also received a complete renovation to include guest accommodation, private from the main home above. The end result is a modern coastal home with a mid-century modern origin reflected in its period features.

This renovation included a passion to retain and enhance it's mid-century character. The solid privacy balustrade screens the living area from the street and the ribbon spiral staircase provides visitors a peak at the Cricket Bat 10 panel solid entry door, to this unique home.

The rear Bi-fold doors bring the outside into this sleek modern kitchen. The Corbelled Block Retaining wall created a flat, user friendly garden area beyond the rear deck, extending the open living space within.

The mixture of kitchen surfaces both contrast and complement the uniquely Mid-Century feel in this kitchen. Each surface works to link mid century charm to its contemporary functionality.

Each feature in this home connects the past with the sleek modern function of each rooms purpose. Seamless movement between living spaces was a 'must have' while retaining the homes original appeal. A tilt servery window engages the kitchen with the vast deck and ocean views beyond.

The Above Bath Niche was chosen to highlight the Vintage tiles which reflect the past but a dramatic restructure of the bathrooms function was needed to bring it into the present.

The Shower Niche which also showcases the owner's Vintage Tiles, connects the bathroom and ensuite areas and adds drama and functionality to an often overlooked feature.

A 'moody' feature wall also highlights a Red Ironbark Veneer recessed Bedhead Niche, linking the bedroom to the homes bathrooms. The 'moody' feature wall colour is the same as the Entry door drawing strong connection between the homes design features.

A ground floor Kitchenette was added to extend living spaces in this home. Guests can enjoy a totally private area below the homes main living areas upstairs. Everstone Aqua Blue finger tiles and contrasting colour scheme were chosen to link this space with the Kitchen above.

A rear deck was added to extend the available living spaces and enjoy the level grassed area which was created by the retaining wall to the rear of the garden. The 'V' angled pole roof supports are a nod to the '50s' design features echoed in the deck supports at the front of the home.

The drama of the solid spiral balustrade features the same colour on the inside as the Cricket Bat Panelled entry door, guiding visitors to the home within. The shadow of the stair treads on the split stone chimney reveals the laser cut pattern on each tread featuring both function and design.

This renovation is a nod to a time past but is now open within, private from the street, interesting and reflective of its origins. It is modern, sleek and fitting of its beautiful coastal location.
