Located on the Crystal Coast of North Carolina in a Maritime forest, this custom homes defining feature is a sweeping cantilevered canopy which frames views of the beach and provides solar shading. Deep porches provide outdoor spaces for the owners and their large family. Nestled in a high dune, each level was set to an elevation that captures the entire horizon view, while the natural landscape flows into the pool and terraced areas. Materials able to withstand the harsh coastal environment were selected for the exterior while the architecture is a nod to mid-century beach modernism. Natural light from the clerestory windows give a pavilion feel to public spaces while bedroom and private spaces remain more intimate. The goal with the project was to create a home that grows out of the landscape in a way that flows and appears to be sculpted by the wind, much like the tangled oak trees that surround it.
