Modern Farmhouse Zen
The bones of this large contemporary house, seating on three acres of beautiful and private garden were good but the looks inside were obliviously stuck in the Seventies. The owners wanted us to create a zen retreat with relaxed yet modern farmhouse looks that could easily make them feel like in a vacation home.
The essence of this house consisted in the open view of the peaceful nature surrounding the property, so we left the window of the entire main floor free from curtains to let the light and the colors of the garden and pool inside. The inspiration was clearly drown from the elements of the country, the seasonal lights and shades offered by the trees. The palette was based on soft and neutral tones of white, beige and grey. We let the entryway, with the solid wood stairs stained in a dark moss shade, to set the tone and the feel of the entire project. We finished the floors in gray oak driftwood planks and the sunroom and the corridor, that takes to the guesthouse, in wide slate tiles.
The large kitchen island and counters are topped with Calacatta white marble. The lighting consists of vintage pendants and chandeliers with wood and black iron details. The pine paneling of the kitchen has been refinished in a bright white matte paint and the beams have been darkened in a moss grey tone. The kitchen's reclaimed wood farmhouse table is surrounded by transparent prexy chairs to create an interesting contrast and a modern feel.
The family room with two large barn doors is dominated by a grey linen corner sofa, large enough to seat eight and placed in front of a honey color stone fireplace. We displayed antique and modern pieces in a well balanced order across the dining room and living room. Both rooms have been defined by charcoal area rugs to enhance the contrast with the white marble tables and beige chenille sectional, placed in the center of the double volume room.
The entire project reflects a casual but sophisticated lifestyle and a clear appreciation of the nature itself of Connecticut state.
