The clients recently purchased an expansive lot of land in rural Kansas. After a briefing, they explained the vision of the property and all of the phases this project would be divided into. The lot of land would have a centralized home that would be connected to smaller living spaces that would be scattered around the entire property. The clients have an end goal of having the capability of housing family and friends across the land while providing private spaces for each to retreat. The idea of potentially renting out these spaces as a short term stays, also appealed to my clients.

The home designed in this project is the central residence that would be the inspiration for the rest of the homes to come.The clients wanted these home to feel like an effortless retreat that payed close attention and highlighted the materials utilized. We didn't shy away from showcasing raw materials and leaned into a cozy cave like environment with a plaster like treatment on the walls. The wabi sabi sensibility of the imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete, guided our choices for furnishings and key design features. I wanted to space the have a clear indoor/outdoor relationship that would take inspiration from the delicacy of the nature that surrounds this entire property.
