Northwest, DC Backyard Oasis

This was a multi-faceted project that involved grading, drainage, fencing, lighting, irrigation, landscaping and masonry. The space got a true face lift!

We extended an existing patio; removed existing brick planter boxes to open the space up; added screening in the way of plants and fencing; converted an existing pond to a fire pit; installed a rustic pathway; installed lighting and irrigation; enhance drainage and grading; installed a rustic patio and connected what was a dissected backyard space.

We preserved many existing elements and renovated others. The space is now much more open and usable. There are also several diverse outdoor living areas now.

Tall screening plants used to soften a long run of privacy fencing. Instead of repeating the same plant, we interspersed Foster Hollies with Emerald Green Arborvitaes.

So as not to wall off the entire backyard space, we added this roughly 2' x 2' window with the same lattice as above the fence. This allows for more light and is more inviting.

On the other side of the yard which is mostly sod with a bed along the fence, we have provided taller screening as the adjoining houses are close together. We installed a screen with some seasonal interest including Fastigiate Hornbeams and Emerald Green Arborvitaes.

The client's family room windows look out onto her driveway and an unsightly view. Thus, we installed this 3' tall trellis to provide some screening. We also planted Wisteria at both ends to climb and spread over the lattice and Liriope to soften the top of the existing brick walls.
