The home was built in 1850 and had been used as a Civil War hospital. It sits on a hill looking out over the Charleston Harbor and directly out to Fort Sumter, where the first shots of the Civil War were fired. Steeped in history is what Charleston is known for and this is a home on a hill that watched it all. When the property was purchased it was in total disrepair. It was a beautiful, stately, lonely home, surrounded by overgrown land.

The project was a gothic revival renovation with large addition to provide a comfortable home for client and family. A retreat and respite, surrounded by gardens and filled with things the they love, reflecting memories of their lives together.

The house was designed with every view from every window thought of. The client is an art collector so the pallet of color had to be calm and let the art speak. The family loves to entertain, so all additions needed to flow to the garden, so all doors could be opened and patios accessible for the flow of friends. Rooms were designed with family, conversation, and peace in mind.
