Owings Mills Kitchen Renovation

This Baltimore County kitchen renovation blends mid-century charm with modern performance, honoring the home’s 1959 origins while introducing updated design, lighting, and technology. What began as a necessary plumbing repair evolved into a full-scale transformation, creating an opportunity to thoughtfully reimagine the space from the ground up.

The design bridges past and present, preserving the home’s craftsman-meets-mid-century character while layering in bold, contemporary elements. Stained cherry base cabinetry with applied molding nods to the original woodwork, while custom-painted slab wall cabinets provide contrast and cohesion. Original built-in seating was carefully restored and reupholstered, maintaining a sense of continuity while integrating seamlessly with the updated palette.

Lighting plays a defining role throughout. Above-cabinet illumination highlights the angled wood ceiling, while under- and in-cabinet lighting brings depth and dimension to the dramatic quartzite countertops. A sophisticated control system allows each layer of light to shift with the mood and function of the space.

Performance-driven appliances are thoughtfully integrated, including a Sub-Zero refrigerator, Wolf wall oven, warming drawer, and microwave, along with a Miele cooktop and vent hood. Finishing details such as a granite composite sink, black stainless fixtures, and brushed pewter hardware add richness and cohesion, while an art glass chandelier introduces a distinctive focal point.

Design challenges became moments of opportunity. A bold oversized checkerboard tile floor required precise alignment across multiple spaces, while the striking quartzite selection brought unexpected depth and character. The result is a kitchen that feels both nostalgic and newly realized, a modern classic rooted in the home’s history and designed for the way it lives today.
