Almonte is a small bedroom community to Ottawa. Quaint and hip, this town is rife with historical buildings, many of which have been or are in the process of being transformed into residential accommodations.
This particular building was built in the 1860s as a hotel for the train station. Over the years, it has seen different uses, most recently as an apartment building. It has also seen its fair share of wear and tear. Most notably, the deteriorating wall at the back of the building.
My plan was to repair the back wall using steel and glass. The rest of the structure would be kept as close to original as is possible, maintaining the historical charm.
Four luxury condos were planned, each with two bedrooms, in-suite laundry and an open living/dining/kitchen space. The south wall, the new steel and glass replacement, would have floor to ceiling windows, wall to wall patios and an additional entry.
Unfortunately, due to the lack of parking available, the project never made it past the design and pricing phase.
