When a structural wall meets a design opportunity, the result can be extraordinary. This compact kitchen renovation in a character residential complex is a testament to what thoughtful, problem-led design can achieve — turning a structural constraint into the most striking feature in the room.
The challenge
The original layout featured a full-height wall that separated the kitchen from the living area, making the space feel closed and disconnected. Our brief was to open the kitchen entirely — but demolition revealed a structural column that could not be removed. Rather than concealing it or working around it, we made it the hero.

The solution
The structural column was integrated seamlessly into a new kitchen island, with both surfaces clad in hand-laid stacked stone tiles. The natural stone — warm in tone, rich in texture — wraps the island base and column in a continuous, sculptural finish that anchors the entire open-plan space. Warm LED strip lighting at the base of the island illuminates the stone from below, adding depth and atmosphere in the evenings.
The design
The kitchen cabinetry contrasts beautifully with the raw stone — clean, handle-less white panels in a high-gloss finish sit opposite the textured island, grounded by a dark veined stone benchtop. A sage-tinted glass splashback adds a soft natural note without competing with the stone. The result is a kitchen that feels simultaneously refined and elemental: contemporary in its lines, rustic in its soul.

The outcome
What was once a cramped, enclosed kitchen is now an open, welcoming social hub — where the boundary between kitchen and living room dissolves entirely. The stone island has become the conversation piece of the home, a reminder that the best design solutions don't hide problems; they transform them.
