Sea Ranch Remodel: Rescuing a DIY Gone Wild
BY KARENSK
Sea Ranch RemodelEmpire Contracting recently completed another dramatic Sea Ranch remodel. Working with designs from David Moulton and Laura Martinez of David Moulton AIA, the majority of this Sea Ranch home was transformed by Empire Contracting, Inc. from a haphazard “DIY Gone Wild” jumble into a bright, sophisticated and livable home.
The entry, at mid-level between kitchen and living room, has new 5-inch wide hickory plank floors, new lighting and a spectacular turquoise-painted barn door that conceals the existing, awkwardly located closets. The hickory floors are now carried throughout the home, eliminating dust-infected carpet, concrete tile and oak floors that had accumulated over earlier haphazard remodels.
Downstairs on the kitchen level, previously dominated by rough-hewn ceiling timbers that gave the room a decidedly ‘ratskeller’ look, Empire has installed a sophisticated new kitchen with cherry and gloss-white cabinets from Ikea, organic white Caesarstone countertops, a cherry butcher-block bar counter and new stainless steel appliances and backsplash. The view to the ocean has been opened with a generous new picture window and all the existing trim has been replaced with clear-finished vertical-grain Douglas Fir. These improvements, along with several coats of bright white paint on the walls and ceiling timbers, have truly made this kitchen/dining room the place to be.
Upstairs on the living room level new hickory floors, a wood-burning cast-iron fireplace and a spectacular Modo chandelier from Roll & Hill have transformed a formerly featureless living room into an inviting place for lounging by the fire, reading and watching TV. On the loft level above the living room, the owner’s favorite sleeping area, Empire renovated a tiny existing half-bath with a new douglas fir countertop, round porcelain sink, new lighting and a new Toto toilet.
In addition to all the interior improvements, Empire diagnosed, repaired and replaced numerous instances of dry-rot and related water-damage in the structure, insuring many years of trouble-free enjoyment for the home’s occupants.
Together, and much to the owner’s delight, Empire Contracting and David Moulton AIA have collaborated in this Sea Ranch remodel, tosuccessfully rescue this home and provide its owners with a truly spectacular Sea Ranch living experience.
