The kitchen as the centre of the home – that was something
the whole family wanted. So there is no living space
in the traditional sense in the Madrona house, simply causally
positioned seating in a range of niches. The openplan
kitchen is at the top of the stairs on the first floor and
opens up to the outside with floor-to-ceiling windows. The
limitation to the bare essentials in terms of furniture and
fixtures is characteristic of the interior – the kitchen area
looks correspondingly spacious with units right down to
the floor, one streamlined unit run and a dining table.
Comfortable access and lots of storage space – both are
a prerequisite for ensuring successful cooking and that
the kitchen can quickly be turned back into living space
again.
The wooden decor fronts of the kitchen bring warmth to
the minimalist furnishing concept. They provide an appealing
contrast to the charcoal-coloured flooring used
throughout and the coordinated room divider that has
shelves on one side. The predominant colour for surfaces,
table top and wall units is white – making the interior
look pleasantly functional, but at the same time friendly
and light. Through the horizontal window the world outside
looks like a framed picture, creating a pleasant sense
of distance to the neighbouring building.
A primarily white interior copes outstandingly with the signs
of work and activity. Everyday utensils are not disturbing
– on the contrary they are vital and decorative.
