Sited on a corner lot with north and east exposure to the street, the Sierra Residence is designed to integrate into the streetscape while maintaining internal privacy. Conceptually, the design draws from the theory of International Movement. The architecture is rational and volumetric. The massing is defined by clean lines and careful articulation of volumes. The interior is stripped down providing clean spaces free of structure and open to one another. These motifs of reducing building components into simple forms and embracing tectonic expressions is exemplary of the movement.

The layout of the house cooperates with the irregularly shaped lot, skewing geometry to leverage usable space and create dynamic moments at points of convergence. Entering over a reflection pond, the front door immediately presents the entirety of the lot from entry to the rear yard. The ground floor is the entertaining level with slide away doors seamlessly leading to all areas of the exterior. From the great room, an exterior courtyard frames views toward the Hollywood Hills. An articulated second story volume hovers over a large portion of the courtyard that serves as the outdoor living room. This modern courtyard area becomes the signature moment of the house as an open vessel of light and shadow, a seamless threshold between interior and exterior, and a canvas to display interactions of materiality.

Tonally warm plaster is the backdrop for the dark artisan brick, vertical hemlock siding and the rhythmic IPE louvers. From the interior, materials transition into the exterior landscape, bridging the visual and physical gap between man-made and nature. At all stories, windows, skylights and lightwells strategically immerse the interior with natural light. The natural material palette coupled with the abundance of light softens the rigidity of the structure, playing a key role in providing comfort to the modern home.
