This previously underutilized area beneath the deck, located near the pool at the top of the hill, was transformed to maximize functionality. The redesign accommodates a variety of uses and ensures the space is comfortable and usable in all weather conditions.

The transformed space is defined by a deeper shade of grey applied to the walls, adding visual depth when viewed from the pool. The underside of the deck is fully finished, allowing the area to be comfortably used during rain while protecting it from debris falling through the upper deck.

Prior to the redesign, the lower level beneath the deck was an underutilized gravel area. By adding a bluestone patio there, we transformed the space, extending it seamlessly to the pool deck to create a cohesive material palette and significantly improve functionality.

This area is located behind the hanging pod chairs. It was a very dark space with only the trunks of the cypress trees visible. We loaded the beds with ferns, lysimachia and climbing hydrangeas, which eventually grew up the neighboring fence and trees.

In deliberate contrast to the home’s midcentury modern aesthetic, the client wanted to add an eclectic, cottage-inspired perennial border. Layered against the structured boxwood hedge, this planting strategy softens the landscape while adding depth, texture, and seasonal variation.
