Spokane Contemporary

Located in the hills above Spokane, this house is a study in angles. The low profile hip roof appears a simple affair, but the tree columns hint that there is more going on here. The dark palette really grounds the home and helps it blend in with the spectacular setting.

As you approach the house your eye is finally drawn away from the tree columns to the pond and approach bridge. The stone wall beyond continues inside forming the entry hall inside. The whole entry experience is a conundrum - "serenely dynamic".

The entry hall is dominated and defined by the native stone wall that started outside in the courtyard. We held the top of the wall down from the ceiling not only to allow light penetration into the space, but also to let the ceiling really float above and be a key player.

The stone fireplace has been set on angle to provide the two sided look even though it's only in a single space against a flat wall. This underscores the over all acute angle theme throughout the house.

The main space is an open flow from their office and personal living room to the kitchen, then dining and finally the formal living room. One thing we enjoy is providing owners a sense of whimsy, a "not quite right" moment that catches people's interest. An all glass powder room?? But note the strategically placed crazed glass for just enough privacy.

The patio overlooks the dramatic drop off into the valley below. The lower floor rooms project out with their own corner views increasing their field of view. Those tree columns and window corners really set the tone and tempo for the whole house.
