Stately Sitting Room and Office
Built for a lumber baron in 1908, fine woodwork prevails. The detailing boasts: exquisite quarter-sawn oak floors and stained glass soaring two stories in the open, commanding staircase.
The handsome wainscot rises up to flank and frame the original solid-oak pocket doors, still intact. The fireplace skirted by book cases is the room’s focal point. To make best use of the asset, we converted it from wood burning to gas for convenience and comfort-efficiency.
The dramatic tray ceiling is the architectural pinnacle of the room. Because of the area’s predominantly dark, heavy atmosphere, the ceiling was used as a vehicle to lighten the space without jeopardizing the home’s historic integrity.
My client, a young doctor, happens to be a fan of blue – universally the world’s most popular color; we painted the ceiling a striking shade of it and contrasted the massive molding in pure white with a majestic gold-leaf detail.
