Sweet Retreat
The renovation at the core of Forest Hill neighborhood, was a full interior upgrade of the existing 1940’s detached home. The kitchen, specifically, was redesigned by tearing down a load-bearing wall and incorporating the drop in the beam into the coffered ceiling. The tray ceiling with rope lighting directly above the island vibrantly illuminates the kitchen space for those entertaining evenings. Prior to the renovation, the kitchen space was smaller and part of a family room and a tiny washroom. After the remodeling, it became the focal part of the home emphasizing the functionality of space by combining the kitchen space with a family room into one large area. The integrated appliance garage conveniently keeps clutter off work space. The 10ft long vein-matched waterfall island topped with a vein-matched quartz counter in the middle of the space provides additional work-space, convenient casual dining, and extra storage. The white kitchen island looks sleek amplified by its vein matched back-splash.
Creating a simple yet bold and striking kitchen layout with the concealed appliances was a challenge. Our Interior Design Team was instrumental in creating a statement of modern contemporary design, while highlighting the clean, solid lines resulting in elegance and refinement. The floors were sanded, stained and varnished on-site for a solid red oak finish complementing the white cabinetry.
Daily communication kept the flow of work going smoothly and the renovation was completed on time. Our industry relationships were able to meet the client’s requirements for purchasing appliances that were on their wish-list, but could not have necessarily purchased had it not been for our builder-related referrals.
Some of the challenges that we faced were working with old joists that were damaged on the second floor directly above the kitchen. The bowing was damaged and had lost the integral functionality. All second-floor joists had to be replaced to make the structure safe which was imperative which in turn solved the problem of leaving a flush and leveled out the kitchen ceiling on the main floor below.
