Tariffville Small Renovation

Finished in time for Christmas!

This lovely couple had some water damage last year to their bedroom. One exterior wall had to be replaced, but the rest looked like it could be patched up and ready in a few hours. However, as I began scraping away the loose paint though, I noticed that two layers of paint and one layer of wallpaper were all wanting to come off... everywhere.

At that point I had to offer the customers some choices. Continuing as is, scraping everything off, oil priming everything, floating compound over all the walls, and priming to ready for painting would cost a lot of money.

Instead, I opted to simply replace all the drywall in all the walls in that room, since we already needed to replace one exterior wall due to water damage. In the end, it turned out beautifully.

In the Living Room, they wanted me to get rid of the ugly fake brick wall around their fireplace, install Crown Molding around the entire room, replace the hardware on the cabinet doors, replace the tile on the Hearth, and tile the Fireplace Surround.

Prepping the Hearth was really fun. It was solid concrete underneath. I had to chew away at it with a special attachment for an Angle Grinder to make room for the new tile. I used a vacuum attachment to keep dust down to a minimum.

Since the fake brick wall was actually clay tiles mortared to T 1-11 board nailed to drywall, I had to cut through all the T 1-11 board around the fireplace and shelves before I could rip it off. Then I had to install Quarter Round all around the shelves and fireplace to hide the T 1-11 that remained underneath them.

In the end, the wall behind wasn't in bad shape, just needed a bit of patchwork.

The Crown Molding went rather smoothly, minus a couple mistakes on my end that cost me an extra 16 footer. Oops.

Had to mortise the Cabinet Doors for the new Hinges. That's always fun!

Customer did all the painting themselves.
