I have been using my parents front yard as a design tool ever since I've graduated the landscape architecture program at CalPoly. When choosing plants for this site I'm faced with two challenges. It has the possibility of 20 degree temperatures and there is a mature white oak that provides a significant amount of shade part of the year. I usually keep to a Mediterranean theme, since there is a mature Queen Palm in the right side planter bed.
