The Quincho
When a “landlocked” interior parcel behind their house came up for sale, clients Per and Cecilia saw more than an empty lot with zoning constraints. They saw an opportunity to create a modern take on a quincho—the traditional outdoor kitchen and entertaining space from Cecilia’s native Argentina—while providing flex space for visiting friends and family to stay. Centered around the art of cooking and entertaining, the 914 SF structure creates a new center of gravity for the couple, their family, and the community.
The Quincho features a full kitchen and dining area inside, complemented by a large BBQ and Argentinian grill outside, making it perfect for entertaining. A fire table, swim spa, and adjacent lawn extend the festivities outdoors. The exterior is clad in durable metal and cement siding for low maintenance, while the hard-troweled concrete floors inside are resilient to spills, weather, and heavy foot traffic. Warmth is added through a wood ceiling and thoughtfully placed in a less exposed location. The interior cabinets, counters, and backsplash are finished with Dekton, a sintered stone tile, for a sleek and functional design.
Large glass doors slide away to expand the living space, inviting sunlight and fresh air. A wall of sliding cabinet doors opens to reveal a coffee station and storage or closes to conceal clutter. A simple bathroom accommodates party and overnight guests, and a steel ladder, designed by DeForest Architects and fabricated by the Dyna Metal Shop, provides access to a loft that doubles as an office for extra sleeping space.
