Transforming a Galley into a Spacious Open Kitchen

A windowless Galley Kitchen darkened by a beam was opened to become a bright, inviting space. The kitchen and all adjacent rooms were completely renovated. The wood floors were leveled and new installed. To improve efficiency new windows were chosen and installed across many rooms on the back of the house.
Sliding doors were installed to access a future deck. The clients called us the following year, when we designed and built the deck for them.

The new high efficiency windows now create a wall of glass looking out onto the pool and yard, with the attractive studio/garage in the distance. The casual dining area/sunroom is a favorite working and gathering place.

When including a corner sink in the design adding an additional small cabinet, here a pullout used for dry goods, can ease the traffic between the sink and dishwasher.

A herringbone pattern marble tile was chosen for the recessed niche behind the cooktop. The niche shelf was custom cut to match the countertop.
Details of the decorative hood area
Many elements in the cabinetry was customized, like this hidden touchlatch door on the side of the prep sink base. The location is just across from the cooktop area, so perfect for spices or other small glasses near the prep sink.

Another customization was the Le Mans swingout unit installed in this corner storage base, a wonderful easy touch.

Shallow cabinet are invaluable when cleverly maximizing storage. This cabinet became the side support for the refrigerator creating that built in look.

This wide shot of the kitchen shows how much light, space and openness the client's now have to all adjacent spaces. The creamy white and brown tones give an inviting warmth to this formerly dark space.
