Transitional Renovation and Addition in Auburn, AL
Like many homes along Samford Avenue built in the 1920’s and 30’s, 553 Samford Avenue was designed in a simple cottage style. The most compelling feature of the modest, 3-bedroom, 2 bath brick-clad home was its location on a beautiful site along Auburn’s Town Creek. After utilizing the property as a second home for two years, the clients asked the design team to transform the house into their primary residence and to design an integrated series of interior and exterior social spaces that would support their contemporary lifestyle and their love of entertaining.
The project was completed in three phases, beginning with the design of a new kitchen, followed by the expansion of the creek-side porch. The porch expansion also provided a formal entrance door facing Samford Ave. Following the pattern common to homes in Charleston, SC this “front door” opens on to the porch, which in turn orients to the side garden. The final phase of the renovation was an addition encompassing a new master bedroom suite, master bath, music room, and a second floor study.
The renovations have also transformed the interiors of the home from small, compartmentalized rooms to a series of light-filled spaces that interconnect to make this small home feel much larger than it is. The entire home serves as a gallery to the Coppock’s extensive and eclectic collection of paintings, with nearly every wall highlighted by a unique piece.
The design language of the renovated interiors within the original house is traditional, while those within the addition are more contemporary in language and scale. The two-story tall music room, designed around a restored 19th Century crystal chandelier, provides a dramatic shift in scale from the rooms within the original structure. The music room features large windows, which fill the space with light and provide views to the gardens and stream beyond.
Following a landscape master plan designed by James Farmer, a large and lushly landscaped terrace connects the renovated porch and the addition to Town Creek.
