Two Lights
An exciting renovation and addition to a multi-level, split level ranch house in Cape Elizabeth. This old home has been opened up and expanded to capture views of the ocean and light house, and to support our client’s needs. The house had undergone multiple additions, and had over 7 levels of space. We worked with the client to create a continuous level for primary living and a single level for her in-home studio.
Located at the intersection of Casco Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, this modern cottage's architecture can be classified as “Regional Modernism.": clean, simple, modern, yet reflecting the local vernacular in form and material.
The owner wanted a new master bedroom suite, a new garage and an open kitchen, dining and living room that captured views of the ocean, all on the same level.
The addition features energy efficient and sustainable attributes, such as dense packed cellulose in walls and attic, zip R sheathing (integrated rigid insulation) on the exterior walls, fiberglass windows and ductless mini-splits for heating and air conditioning.
The new stair tower and entry are positioned between the new volume and the existing to blend the new and old in a complimentary way.
Corner windows are used to open up interior spaces to the exterior and to focus on views of the ocean and the lighthouse beyond.
