Urban Island Village Compound
Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard was once home to working whalemen. The neighborhood grew over time, formed by modest homesteads for blacksmiths and shipwrights. Davis Lane was “scripted” to fit right into the neighborhood, despite its completion some centuries after its historic neighbors. A story was written in which the house was envisioned to be a 1700s Federal Colonial that grew over time as its family and use expanded. The homestead, circa 2005, now includes a pod of structures with the deliberate patina of age, combined with contemporary comforts of modern times and casual island living. The architectural language of the Urban Island Village Compound has integrity in the context of its environment and reflects on the culture of Edgartown. The story and history offered something to build on and through informal historical references and architectural elements, instant nostalgia and a place to call home was created.
