Village Loft

Ecostruct and General Assembly worked together to create a contemporary feel in a post war renovated double height apartment near Union Square. The high ceilings and double height windows offered a ton of potential which the existing loft, bathroom and kitchen were not taking advantage of, with many partitions and poor structural construction. We began by rebuilding and better stabilizing the loft, opening up a couple of walls to provide direct exposure to the large windows. To stick with the client's darker aesthetic preferences, a custom dark walnut kitchen was built and installed, with paperstone countertops, a black Blanco sink and stainless appliances. Adjacent to the kitchen, floor to ceiling walnut doors were installed on offset Deltana pivot hinges to take advantage of an existing recess in the party wall, adding significant storage to the apartment. The most challenging element of the project was designing and building a narrow stair to fit the existing space between entry and loft. We accomplished this by engineering an alternating step stair of 5/4" finished plywood, leaving the finished edges exposed for a little contrast to the dark walnut treads. A cold rolled steel railing mounted to the party wall finished this perfectly.
