Volunteer Projects - September 11 Memorial

Ramsey 9/11 Memorial

A contorted steel beam artifact from the World Trade Center and a granite plaque memorializing the events of 9/11, donated to the Borough of Ramsey on 9/11/02, will now have a permanent home at the southern end of Finch Park. The Mayor and Council have been working closely with Blueline Architecture to create a place for reflection and a beacon of remembrance for all that was lost on that tragic day – 10 years ago.

The memorial concept was envisioned from the loss of the Twin Towers from the New York City skyline. This negative relief will be seen as one passes the memorial on Gertzen Plaza or visits its private setting. There will be two polished concrete walls 6 1/2 feet long by 6 1/2 feet tall and 12 inches thick. The two walls will be offset from each other and be separated by another 2 foot wide wall with two 12 inch square voids within the ground. These voids represent the outline of the “Twin Towers” and have been oriented in the same north-south direction as the WTC. The two walls are in direct proportion to the ‘towers’ in both height and width. At night, the memorial will be softly up-lit to pay tribute to the once remaining towers. Additional memorializing writings are proposed on the face of the walls. Two, large concrete pads, once used for shuffle board will be modified and act as a foundation to anchor the walls. Ironically, the pads will have the exact proportions to the outline of the World Trade Center towers and will remain buried under the memorial.

Leading up to the memorial will be a de-constructed paver walkway representing the incomprehensible devastation in NYC, Shanksville, PA and the US Pentagon. During the ‘journey’ the donate granite plaque can be seen recessed into one of the polished concrete walls; the walk then solidifies around the memorial to symbolize the coming together of our nation. One is then drawn to walk around the offset walls to view the steel artifact. There will be large landscape boulders for sitting and a reflection bench with a tranquil pond-less waterfall that cradle the memorial plaza.

Ramsey’s three residents, lost on 9/11, are memorialized in a simple rock garden at the base of the invisible towers.
