Washington Park Craftsman Kitchen

This homeowner took a tiny kitchen from the 1930s and enlarged and updated it to fit his lifestyle and taste for the 21st century. Touches like raising the height of the dishwasher to alleviate stooping that might hurt his injured back, creating another prep area away from the cooktop and allowing for storage of his various small appliances and kitchen gadgets are just a few of the ways we were able to make this kitchen very personalized.

The refrigerator and dishwasher were both hidden behind panels to create a more cohesive look and feel. We wanted to avoid calling attention to a large appliance and chose to keep the continuity and warmth of the natural cherry cabinets. The dishwasher was raised to alleviate any further damage...

The split-level counter allows for people to sit or stand to work, eat or chat depending on their personal height preference. It also allows for a clean visual line from the dining room, just in case the homeowner decided to eat before finishing the dishes.

This second prep area can also serve as a wet bar depending on the size and type of the party. A second garbage disposal was installed to allow for easy clean up when used for food preparation.

The homeowner wanted a large bar where his guests could sit or stand while he was preparing meals. He knows that everyone gathers in the kitchen no matter what and he wanted to capitalize on this. The raised bar also allows him to hide dishes from the people seated at the dining room table.

The pot filler makes it easy to fill large pots with water when it might otherwise be too heavy to carry from the sink to the cooktop.
