Watkinsville Workshop

We fabricate our timber frames in our two man shop outside Athens, GA. Everything is done by hand using both power tools and traditional hand tools. We equally enjoy cutting both the simple awning or shed, or the complex roof system that takes some creative design and engineering.

We enjoy finding old tools and giving them new life. These don't go on a mantle or get hung on a wall. They are workhorses in our shop.

We use power tools right along side our traditional hand tools. They are fast, but they require a lot of skill and practice to be accurate and safe.

This is a walnut knee brace to white oak post connection. All of the wood for this frame was urban salvage timber. This is a great shot showing how timbers are joined together with 1" Pins.

This was a fun (and complicated) joint that we used in a frame for a client's personal workshop. This is half of a wedged dovetail through mortise and tenon.

The other half of the wedged dovetail through mortise and tenon. You can see the pencil layout on the timber. It gives a glimpse in to our world in the shop where we have to figure out how to create these joints.

This is about as busy as a post can get.

Complex post

Completed joint. We typically don't test fit our joinery in the shop. We rely on being correct and very accurate and most frames go together for the first time when they show up on site. However, when they are big and complex, we'll occasionally test fit one set to make sure we got it right.
