Webster Residence
This house in the heart of Venice Beach represents another variation on courtyard living as a sensible solution to maximizing privacy and outdoor enjoyment in an urban setting. The principal living areas are two-story painted stucco boxes separated by a garden; with concrete steps descending from the rear space, which is built at a higher level, the courtyard becomes a verdant amphitheatre. Glass roll-up doors facing the interior courtyard and the front entrance court allow unimpeded views through the ground floor, and when opened transform the house into an airy pavilion.
The service elements of the house (kitchen, bathrooms and stairways) are contained in a narrow core which runs the length of the house on the east side; inside and out it is wrapped in thin concrete panels in a rain-screen application.
At its center is a system of steel-grate bridges and floating stairs, which connect the two principal volumes horizontally and vertically, bathed in light from a two-story window wall and leading up to an ocean-view roof terrace that is fully equipped for social gatherings. Roof canopies and balcony overhangs extend beyond the glass line, providing protection from sun and rain.
