The homeowners had a little used corner of yard, with a hard to mow slope. After talking with them they were really interested in berries of all kinds. We designed a mini forest garden on a raised island for the centerpiece; including a Honey crisp Apple and Fruit Cocktail tree for the canopy, Goji and Blackberries for the shrub layer, and both June bearing and ever-bearing Strawberries for the ground cover. These were supplemented with a clover/brassica mix to provide nutrients. The surrounding raised beds were planted with blueberries and raspberry varieties, nutrient accumulators and an heirloom sedum from a grandmothers home. Two 4x8' raised beds were included for annual vegetable crops, trellises along the deck for cold-hardy kiwi, and one with Maypop Passion Fruit vines in front of the rain barrel to camouflage its presence. The fire ring was also on the wish list, with tree log seating. Two paw paw trees were the final touch, that will provide pudding flavored fruit as well as shade in the late afternoon.
