Winchester Stairs
I knew that I wanted a mix of modern and traditional styling when designing this new home. I asked the architect to design the stairs reminiscent of something you'd find in a turn of the century Queen Anne victorian with a modern twist. The stairs go from the basement to the attic with the absence of any doors to separate the spaces. The steps and landing going from the second floor to the attic is self-supported by two steel flitch plates hidden inside the stringers and bolted to the framing. Doing it this way eliminated the need for a column between the mid-floor landings. This self supporting platform carries the load from the longer stair section that ends in the finished attic.
