Wintertime Front Yard Update

This young family was getting tired of a boring front yard with a lawn that would never stay watered due to the slope. Overgrown arborvitae had splayed open in the previous winter's snow, and they knew it was time to do something else.

They asked me to help them come up with a new front yard seating area that would allow them to enjoy the space as a family. We created a beautiful bluestone patio with a seating rock, and steps across the yard.

There will be a water feature installed next spring to attract birds, and pretty blue star creeper will grow in between the flagstones.

AFTER: The homeowners wanted all the lawn to be removed, and a new level patio in the front.

AFTER: Curving sand-finish concrete walkway creates a more graceful approach to the front door. The new patio will have outdoor furniture to go along with the prominent seating rock (exactly 20" tall for comfortable seating).

AFTER: While I always try to make my planting plans complete in advance of the actual construction, sometimes the "as-built" condition requires a few extra plants to fill it in and that was the case with this installation.

AFTER: View toward the cul-de-sac. As the plants grow in, the homeowners should have a semi-private, sunny seating area. The low section of fence replaces the overgrown arborvitae that were removed, and hides the neighbors' garbage and recycling bins.
