Work / Life Balance Garden
This fun family had an underused, over grown, sloped yard that was dominated by an old and dilapidated sport court. The clients vision was to create a place that would allow work life balance by creating a home office, outdoor grilling, entertaining for the family and friends around a fire, and an adequate area for a vegetable garden. The plant palette is a mix of native and sustainable material. The lawn areas are small and almost a third of the project was set aside for the small urban farm- vegetable garden area. This garden is bird and butterfly friendly with low water plants like blueberry, shrub and carpet roses, sages, coneflower, nepeta, lambs ear along with a mix of ornamental grasses and evergreen shrubs.
The office, small lawn, main patio and the firepit were placed in the old sport court location at the lower terrace level of the property. These elements would drawn the family into the lower area. Two lawn terraces were created for croquet and place for the dog to run. The hillside rockery, stone steps are the connection from the basement terraced patio and vegetable garden to the lower patio and office. This garden although traditional in design has a cottage and english feel to it due to the informal planting style.
