The island was Calacatta Gold marble. In my new kitchen I went with 2" thick Carrara marble (white with gray veining throughout) throughout. Love both, and both etch like crazy. After a year of etches, they flow together and become part of the patina. I do not intend to get them buffed out. Marble is NOT for everyone. I've had polished Calacatta Gold for 7 years. It was sealed during installation so I have not had any issues with staining, but it etches very easily. If you leave a glass on it with a little water on the bottom, it leaves a ring. You cannot put anything hot on it. I put a very hot cup of tea on mine and it left a ring. It chips fairly easily around the edges and sink cut outs. It's easy to hit the edge while washing pots and pans. I do think honed would be more forgiving as far as seeing the etch marks. I've never seen anything I like nearly as much as this marble, so would do it again, but honed. You need to consider how you and your family feel about the extra care of a marble top and how much imperfections like etching would bother you. Quartzite is a natural stone that has many characteristics of marble, but not sure what is currently available in white.

Joychanter, you're right, it's technically a quartzite but when I have said that to some people in the past, they naturally think quartz, a man made material which it is not. I was told that a quartzite is technically a granite with a higher level of quartz in it. This one was on the higher price range, I'm not sure how it compared to marble because I didn't price that knowing I would be looking for every stain and etch mark. I negotiated the price down with my distributor and paid $6k total for two slabs which included install, plumbing hook up and ogee edge. I'm in the dc metro so prices tend to be a bit higher out here. Also, my white macaubus has more swirl pattern but some have very linear straight lines giving it a much more contemporary look. The base color of mine has a touch of gray as apposed to a clean white base on a gray veined marble. Good luck and keep us posted on your selection!

Any acid in direct contact w/the marble will etch it almost instantly: lemon juice, vinegar, etc. You can only see the etch marks if you look at the slab at almost eye level. I've got a lot now (not about to give up citrus!) so it's part of the patina. I love that about marble - it's "living". It's not for everyone, thought.

There is a picture of the mudroom on this site (search for "subeeskitchen" and it should come up). Doesn't show much, though. The laundry alcove is to the left of the sink that's shown; to the right are cabinets, shelves, boot storage, etc. The pantry is in a hallway that connects the mudroom/laundry to the door we go in and out of most of the time. (Yes - ideally the mudroom would've been located off that door, but it didn't work with the old part of the house.) Right now I'm not planning to post additional photos on Houzz, though I may do a pantry feature on my blog at some point soon.

I have large (12x24) dark gray slate tiles in my mudroom and really like them. Belgian bluestone is a great look, but it's expensive and I don't know how it would hold up for kitchen usage (etching from acids, etc. ) Maybe there's a dark brown or charcoal veining in your countertops that could be tied into a floor color? Best bet is to get a bunch of samples from a tile showroom and see what you like best.

The farm-style table is vintage, but Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware have similar models. The hardware is Restoration Hardware ("Bistro" pulls, "Aubrey" knobs, in brushed/satin finish).

I agonized, lost sleep over this...45" is perfect in a modest kitchen, I suppose if you have a very large kitchen you could go wider than that. We ended up doing ours 46" and is is great too, but our old kitchen in a big "u" required that extra step and it was tiring. This is incredibly important to your future happiness in working in your kitchen. I suggest you lay some card tables out and mimic working in the kitchen, from sink to counter to fridge etc. and see how it feels. My kitchen man with 30 years experience to,d me 42 to 48, yet I still agonized between 45 and 46, but that's just my OCD side I think..our whole kitchen is 13.5x24, with the island down the middle, and it looks quite proportionate with the 46" separation. I love the smaller ones. (Ours are not LED, but they're on a dimmer switch to save a little electricity). There are some comments on other Houzz questions regarding the lights & placement. Ours are spaced about 4' apart on centers. (You'll need more of the smaller ones to light the same area, and the smaller ones cost more, but I think they're worth it.)

The fir or the Minwax?? Minwax is everywhere -- HomeDepot, paint stores, etc. I honestly wouldn't go with fir unless you already have it in the house and are trying to match it. (Way too soft.)

The pendants are Hudson Valley 7315 in satin nickel. The chandelier over the table is a Preciosa (model discontinued). Hope this helps.

Hi - I'm pretty sure the stain we used was Minwax Puritan Pine. The wood is fir, which had a redish cast. (We were trying to match the old fir floors throughout the rest of the house.)

I loved this kitchen and took the pic in to my countertop supplier and installer. I saw a few and everyone of them, I mean -100% said no way to marble in the kitchen, and even worse feedback I received was no honed marble. It too porous, soft and stains no matter what sealant you use. Unless you have lots of money to have it polished out every six months. Again polished out if you've polished it. It was a big disappointment but I've got a kitchen that's used by kids, teens and a husband I just couldn't chance putting so much $$$ into a kitchen I couldn't really "use". Almost like those couches that grandma had with plastic on them. It's just not a material that anyone I spoke to who installed as well as fixed problems with these types of countertops, hmm plastic on the counters?? Guess it could work lol. Hope your kitchen has stayed looking lovely. I went with a quartz (not man made) for my island. Honed granite, which I was warned will have fingerprint issues ect...) I decided I could still work with it. Hope I have no troubles! Lol

The cabinets were custom-built, but are a traditional inset/simple panel design. A long island has benefits (work space, storage) if it works with the scale of the room(s), but it can also make it a little hard to get from one side to the other.

Yes - custom-made is the way to go for a perfect fit. The fabric is Sunbrella outdoor fabric, so they clean up very easily (usually with just a damp sponge).

I do not know if anyone makes a porcelain version, it is not a popular or trendy wood now. However, the fir is beautiful, and wears fine if you don't have dogs and walk around barefoot.

Pickell Architecture

This type of bench seating is always custom built to fit the particular space. We had a carpenter built it, with stock drawers. The cushions are custom made by a local upholstery shop, they also must be measured to fit exactly.

This sort of seating is always built in place by a carpenter, they usually buy the drawer fronts, but the seat must be fit precisely to the bay window. A local upholsterer made the cushions to fit the seat.

I believe it was by Danver. They're 10” deep x 2.5” thick and come in standard widths of 18”, 24”, 30”, 36”, 42“, 48”, 60” and 72”.
