Is the thickness of the granite as it appears or is that a dropped edge that gives the appearance of being extra thick? My manufacturer said granite is too heavy to make very thick.

Thanks. The designer calls it Tidal White. I went to slab showroom today and found a granite called Blanco Montanha that looked similar. There seem to be several names for same granite. Then it is leathered or satin finished. Not glossy. I like it.

I love the mitered apron (double thick) island. Wondering if you can help me understand the "mechanics" of this fabrication. I would like to duplicate in my kitchen.

I am considering this feature on my island only (with a different granite on "perimeter". If I do this, would the island counter be slightly taller than the other counters? How do you account for the double thick edge appearance and not have it interfere with your drawers? Any thing I should be aware of when seeking this type of fabrication (I see there are many ways this can be implemented)? Suggestions and specifics welcome. Thanks!

Claire, not sure. Some stones do look great honed...and others not. Best would be to get a sample to decide for yourself. All the best! Mikal

Leathered vs honed - I do not like the high gloss of granite and I'm curious as to whether leathered or honed granite is harder to maintain. Staining is a problem from what I'm learning. I'll reconsider if maintenance is an issue. Thanks for any wisdom you may have for me.

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Vanessa Brunner added this to Kitchen of the Week: Two Islands in Colorado
The client wanted an uninterrupted space to prepare family meals, hence the two islands. One is for prep and cooking, the other is for cleanup and eating. Flooring: white oak in mahogany finish; main kitchen counter: tidal white granite in leathered finish
Vanessa Brunner added this to Houzz Call: Show Us Your Two-Cook Kitchen
Limited counter space can make prepping a group meal next to impossible. The owners of this Colorado kitchen decided to nip that problem in the bud by adding an extra island during their remodel. One island is for prep and cooking; the other is for cleanup and eating. Tell us: Do you have two islands? An extra table? Would you ever consider it?
Vanessa Brunner added this to The 20 Most Popular Kitchens of the Week in 2012
9. Two Islands in ColoradoThis family of five wanted extra space so they could all hang out in the kitchen together. Two islands and two refrigerators divide the kitchen by activity — prep and cooking, cleanup and eating — so that the entire family can function seamlessly in the space.
