Thanks for your kind words. The slate we used here has a relatively rough and varied surface but in the shower area for ease of cleaning honed slate was installed. The room is about 10' x 11' give or take a few inches. The ceiling is 8'.

Yes, there is a shallow planter about 1.5" deep and it is waterproofed so the moisture from the moss does not rot out the framing it sits on. No drainage is required as the moss doesn't really get watered like a plant but rather it is misted with a spray bottle so it doesn't get too wet. The moss garden in the entry of the house is a bit deeper at 4" so that it could be used for other small plants in addition to the moss.

One way to get diffused light is to live in the Pacific Northwest in a forested area. The skylight in this picture is a clear, fixed 2'x2' skylight. The roof structure is heavily insulated making the roof structure deep, the curb the skylight is mounted on makes the light well even deeper. With a fairly long shaft for the light to get through it generally hits the sides of the light shaft rather than shining directly into the room. On a sloped roof a similar diffusion will occur if the skylight is facing north as the sun rarely comes directly from that direction (unless you live in the southern hemisphere). Frosted skylights and the ever popular light tubes tend to give an artificial feeling to the light as no sky is visible. You might as well put in an LED light panel and save on the heat loss or gain.
