Why was cedar used for the battens and cement boards? Is there a benefit to this vs using cement boards for the battens as well?

At the time this house was built cement board battens were not available in our region.

They were custom built for this project by James Hall Construction, Camano Island WA.

The vent is 2' by 2'6'' and you should be able to order a vent like this from your local lumber yard.
