The backsplash is available at italics.org in emeryville. The color looks slightly different when you purchase it, but after grouting it looks just like the picture. We just renovated our kitchen and did the same theme. White cabinets, the shiitake mushroom countertop and the Lycian elemental Myra kragos cream backsplash. Just one word of caution - the backsplash is quite fragile and needs to be installed carefully. But, once installed and grouted, it looks awesome!

this is a case by case concern. This island is plenty deep to avoid this and the use of a hood or downdraft should prevent this issue with most typical cooking. Obviously, there are some things I would avoid doing at the cooktop when people are too close. Good old fashioned kitchen caution applies. :) Good luck!
