This is a great look for the home. Who did you get your cabinets from? We have been looking at Carolina Heartwood Cabinetry since they are at a good price and looks great.

We used apple-ply with leaving the edges exposed. Our cabinet maker laminate it. Note that you have to laminate both sides otherwise it will warp.

We just bought this malm fireplace, but am told we need a hearth under it. Any good suggestions as to what material we should use. The fireplace is on a light wood floor right now.....all the photos I see of this fireplace never have a hearth underneath.

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Ivon Street Studio added this to Kitchen Counters: Plastic Laminate Offers Options Aplenty
Special considerations: Because laminates are so thin, edge details require forethought to avoid that telltale brown line at the counter's edge. Options include:Profiled edge: Laminates have advanced to now have beveled, ogee and bullnose edge profiles, which vary by manufacturer. Edge band: These thick and dense veneers are adhered to the cabinet edge and are made for abuse. Choose ABS plastic edge bands over PVC whenever possible, as ABS is recyclable and chlorine free. Metal edge: Go retro with this detail that harks back to the 1950s; a metal edge is fastened to the edge of the counter. Neatniks might think twice about this crumb-catching detail.Exposed plywood: As shown in this photo, some modern designs showcase the thin laminate veneer and adhere it to premium plywood, leaving the thin veneer edge and plies exposed.

Plastic Laminate Kitchen CountersAlthough it’s sometimes scoffed at by stone lovers, plastic laminate still has a serious fan base. The wide range of customizable edges and finishes means it can work in any design. At $8 to $20 per square foot installed, its affordable price makes it a winner for many. However, it’s not the most durable of countertops, so it may not be best for heavy-duty cooks.Guide: Pros and cons of plastic laminate counters

This is a different way to do our countertops. I am not sure if it's the best but its an idea and it looks very pretty and smooth. Wood looking countertops is something I don't see every day so I like it because is different.
