No. The boxes have metal liners in them with a drainage system below. The planting depth is about 18", there are some shrubs in the planters as well.

The decking is Ipe and the siding is cedar. Properly cared for, they can last 40-50 years. It is worth it to treat with the best treatment you can find such as: Cabot, Penofin or similar

Plan for plants. Other clever deck built-ins include planters. This is a great opportunity for adding a layer of privacy with taller plants, and creating a spot for an edible garden.

5. Colorful. To get a long-lasting show of color in container plantings, it can be helpful to rely on colorful foliage, rather than (or in addition to) flowers. Here, a mixed planting of golden breath of heaven (Coleonema pulchellum ‘Sunset Gold’), silver myrtle spurge (Euphorbia myrsinites), salvia and ornamental grasses form a bright border for a terrace in the Pacific Northwest. The color in this combination comes mainly from the plant’s foliage, with flowers in bloom being a bonus to the design. In spring, the breath of heaven would be covered with pale pink or white blossoms and the spurge would bloom yellow-green.
